YourDrivingandtheRoad Here you'll find helpful information and tips about the road and how to drive under different conditions. [. . . ] If you start steering quickly enough, your vehicle may straighten out. Always be ready fora second skid if it occurs. Skidding In a skid, a driver can lose control of the vehicle. Defensive drivers avoid mostskids by taking reasonable care suited to existing conditions, and by not "overdriving" those conditions. The three types of skids correspond to your vehicle's three control systems. In the steering or cornering skid, too muchspeed or steering in a curve causes tires to slip and lose cornering force. And in the acceleration skid, too much throttle causes the driving wheels to spin. A cornering skid and an acceleration skidare best handled by easing your foot off the accelerator pedal. Of course, traction is reduced when water, snow, ice, gravel or other material is on the road. For safety, you'll want to slow down andadjust your driving to these conditions. It is important to slow down slippery on surfaces because stopping distance will be longer and vehicle control more limited. While driving on a surface with reduced traction, try your best to avoid sudden steering, acceleration or braking (including engine braking by shifting to a lower gear). You may not realize the surface is slippery until your vehicle is skidding. Learnto recognize warning clues -such as enough water, iceor packed snow on the road to make a "mirrored surface" -- and slow down when you have any doubt. Remember: Any anti-lock brake system (ABS) helps avoid only the braking skid. 4-12 Driving at Night 0 Adjust your inside rearview mirror to reduce the glare from headlamps behind you. Since you can't see as well, you may need to slow down and keep more space between you andother vehicles. Your headlamps can light up only so much road ahead. 0 0 In remote areas, watch for animals. If you're tired, pull off the road in a safe place and rest. Night Vision No one can see as well at night as in the daytime. A 50-year-old driver may require at least twiceas much light to see the same thing at night as a 20-year-old. Night driving is more dangerous than day driving. One reason is that some drivers are likely to be impaired -- by alcohol or drugs, with night vision problems, or by fatigue. Here are some tips o n night driving. 0 Drive defensively. Don'tdrinkand drive. What you do in the daytime can also affect your night vision. For example, if you spend the day in bright sunshine you are wise to wear sunglasses. They maycut down on glare from headlamps, but they also make a lot of things invisible. 4-13 You can be temporarily blinded byapproaching headlamps. It can take a second or two, or even several seconds, for your eyes to readjust to the dark. [. . . ] Some state laws may require you to use this program before filing a claim with a state-run arbitration program or in the courts. For further information, contact the BBB at 1-800-955-5 100 or the Chevrolet Customer . Assistance Center at 1-800-222- 1020. REPORTING SAFETY DEFECTS TO THE UNITEDSTATES GOVERNMENT If you believe that your vehicle hasa defect which could cause a crash or could cause injury or death, you should immediately inform the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), in addition to notifying General Motors. If NHTSA receives similar complaints, it may open an investigation, and if it finds that a safety defect exists in a group of vehicles, it may order a recall and remedy campaign. [. . . ]
